Switzerland, learned by playing: the 26 cantons with their coats of arms, the capitals, mountains, passes, lakes, rivers, battles and historical events. A place lights up on the map and you name it as fast as you can. On iPhone and iPad, in English, German, French and Italian.
You start with the 26 cantons, each with its coat of arms, then the 26 capitals, each with a photo of the city: these two categories are free.
Premium opens six more categories of 12 questions each: mountains, passes, lakes, rivers, battles and historical events. Mountains, passes, lakes and rivers appear as a photo or drawn on the map. Battles and events show the year and a picture. After you answer, each historical event comes with a short explanation.
Each turn a place lights up on the map of Switzerland. The smallest cantons, such as Basel-Stadt, Zug or Appenzell Innerrhoden, appear with an enlarged outline, so they are easy to see even on a phone. Tap a photo to see it bigger.
If you don’t know the answer, skip it: it comes back later in the same game. The timer stops when you pause or leave the app.
In Classic you type the name and you have three tries. Capitals, accents, apostrophes and hyphens don’t matter. The name is accepted in English, German, French or Italian, even with a small typo: “Geneva”, “Genf”, “Genève” and “Ginevra” all work.
In Multiple choice you pick one of four answers and you have two tries. It is part of Premium. Historical events are always played this way.
Each right answer is worth 100 points plus a speed bonus, which starts at 100 and drops to zero in 20 seconds. In Classic, if you make mistakes before getting it right, the points are divided by the number of tries. Each wrong answer takes away 10 points, but the score never goes below zero.
The app keeps your record in every category. The sum of your records goes to Game Center, with one leaderboard for each mode.
There is nothing to sign up for: answers and scores stay on your device. The app speaks English, German, French and Italian, with place names in your language.
The app is free, with ads suitable for all ages. Premium removes the ads and unlocks Multiple choice and the six extra categories: an annual subscription, or a one-time purchase that lasts forever.
