Frequently asked questions

How do I play?

On the start screen choose a category and a mode. Each turn a place lights up on the map: a canton or a capital with an enlarged copy of its shape, a lake or a river drawn on the map, a mountain or a pass with its photo, a battle or a historical event with its year and a picture. Name it as fast as you can. When you have guessed them all, the category is complete.

Which categories are there?

Eight. Cantons and Capitals have 26 questions each and are free. Mountains, Passes, Lakes, Rivers, Battles and Historical events have 12 questions each and are included with Premium. Each category is a game of its own, with its own record.

What happens when I finish a category?

You see your points and your total, plus a new record if you set one. Then you can go on to the next category with "Next round", choose another category, or finish the game.

What is the difference between Multiple choice and Classic?

In Multiple choice you pick one of four answers and you have two tries. In Classic you type the name and you have three tries. Each mode has its own leaderboard. Historical events are always played as Multiple choice.

How do I change category or mode?

At the end of a category tap "Choose another category". At any time you can tap ↺ (Restart) at the top: after you confirm, you go back to the start screen and choose category and mode again. The current game is lost.

Why do some items have a lock?

Multiple choice and the six categories Mountains, Passes, Lakes, Rivers, Battles and Historical events are unlocked by Premium. Without Premium you play Cantons and Capitals in Classic.

How are points calculated?

Each right answer is worth 100 points plus a speed bonus, which starts at 100 and drops to zero in 20 seconds: the timer color and the bar show how much bonus is left. In Classic, if you make mistakes before guessing, the points for that question are divided by the number of tries. Each wrong answer takes away 10 points, but the score never goes below zero. The most you can score is 5200 points in Cantons and Capitals and 2400 in the other categories.

In Classic, do I have to type the exact name?

Capitals, accents, apostrophes and hyphens don't matter. The name is accepted in English, German, French or Italian: "Geneva", "Genf", "Genève" and "Ginevra" all work. Long names are accepted even with a small typo. Abbreviations work even without the dots, so "St Gallen" works as well as "St. Gallen" and "Sankt Gallen".

I don't know the answer: can I skip it?

Yes, tap the skip button at the bottom ("Skip this canton", "Skip this lake" and so on): you move on to the next question and the skipped one comes back later in the same category. After too many mistakes the app shows you the right answer and moves on.

Can I see the photo better?

Yes: tap the photo and it opens enlarged, tap again to close it. The timer keeps running in the meantime.

What happens after a historical event?

Whether you got it right or not, a short explanation of the event appears. Read it at your own pace: the timer is stopped until you tap the button to move on.

Does the timer keep running if I stop?

No. It stops during the "Correct!" and "Wrong!" messages and while the ⓘ screen is open: when you close it, the game resumes by itself with "Here we go!". If you tap ⏸ (pause) you can choose between "Resume" and "Finish game". If you leave the app, a 3-second countdown starts when you come back: tap the screen to resume right away. The only exception is the enlarged photo, where the timer keeps running.

How do the leaderboards work?

There is one Game Center leaderboard for each mode. Your total goes on the leaderboard, that is the sum of your records in all the categories. It is updated every time you complete a category. You also see your records and totals on the start screen. Records per category start with version 4.0. Open the leaderboards from the ⓘ screen or at the end of the game with "View leaderboard". You need to be signed in to Game Center in Settings.

What is Premium and how do I get it?

Premium removes all ads and unlocks Multiple choice and the six extra categories. In the ⓘ screen tap "Premium", or tap an item with a lock: you can choose a yearly subscription or a one-time purchase that lasts forever.

I changed device or reinstalled the app: how do I get Premium back?

On the Premium screen tap "Restore Purchases", with the same Apple Account you used to buy. No account of ours is needed.

How do I cancel the subscription?

In your App Store account settings: Settings → your name → Subscriptions. With an active subscription you also find a "Manage Subscription" button on the Premium screen. Cancel at least 24 hours before it expires, otherwise it renews.

Are the ads suitable for children?

The app asks Google for ads suitable for all ages only. If you prefer not to see any, you can remove them with Premium.

Does it work on iPad and iPhone Duo?

Yes. On iPad and on iPhone Duo, folded or unfolded, the app also adapts to landscape. On the other iPhones you play in portrait.

How do I change my advertising privacy choices?

For Google's consent tap ⓘ and then "Privacy settings" (the option appears where European rules require it). For cross-app tracking go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. For details see the privacy policy.

I don't get notifications

Check in Settings → Notifications → Guess Swiss that they are allowed. Notifications are optional and used only for occasional news about the app.

Reporting a problem

To help us reproduce it quickly, tell us your iPhone or iPad model, the system version and the app version with its build (you find them at the bottom of the ⓘ screen), the category and mode you were playing, plus what you were doing just before the problem appeared.

Comment joue-t-on ?

Come cambio categoria o modalità?

Gallen» e «San Gallo».

Devi aver effettuato l'accesso a Game Center in Impostazioni.

Ho cambiato dispositivo o reinstallato l'app: come riottengo Premium?

Come disdico l'abbonamento?
