Where the numbers come from
When the authorities publish an official waiting time, the app shows that. When they only publish the length of the queue, it converts it using the usual rule for metered traffic at the Gotthard — about ten minutes per kilometre. And when there’s no bulletin at all, it shows the live travel delay from Apple Maps. “Clear, 0 minutes” isn’t an error: it means there’s no queue right now.
The 24-hour chart
Queues at the Gotthard build up at weekends, on public holidays and on the big holiday-getaway days. The chart of the last 24 hours shows how the day has gone — useful to tell whether you’re looking at a peak or a queue that’s clearing.
Alerts and webcams
Official alerts come from the Swiss traffic management centre (VMZ-CH) in the three national languages; the app picks the one closest to your settings, and its interface speaks Italian, English, German and French. The webcams are run by FEDRO (USTRA): if one is out of service, the notice comes from the roads authority and it’s usually back within a few days.
A serious word of caution
Queue information comes from the authorities and may occasionally differ from the actual situation. And above all: never use the app while driving.
