1. Who we are
Guess the US State (for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV) is an app by Fabrizio Bacchin (Switzerland) for learning to recognize the 50 states of the USA. This policy also covers the previous versions, which are no longer on sale and no longer updated.
| App | Advertising |
|---|---|
| Guess the US State (iPhone and iPad, free) | Google AdMob banners and interstitials, which can be removed with Premium — see sections 4 and 6. |
| Guess the US State (Apple TV) | None. Playable with Premium only — see section 6. |
| Guess the US State Classic (iPhone, paid) | None. The app contains no advertising code. |
| Guess the US State Kids (iPhone, paid, no longer on sale) | None. The app contains no advertising code. |
| Guess the US State HD and HD Kids (iPad, paid, no longer on sale), Guess the US State TV (Apple TV, no longer on sale) | None. The apps contain no advertising code. |
| Guess the US State HD Light (iPad, free, no longer on sale) | Google AdMob interstitials — see section 4. |
2. Your data stays on your device
The answers you type or choose, your scores and your game progress stay on your device and are not uploaded anywhere. There is no account and no cloud sync.
If you use Game Center and complete a game, the app sends your final score to the Game Center leaderboard of the mode you played. Game Center is an Apple service governed by Apple's privacy policy: we only see the leaderboards, like any other player.
3. Push notifications — iPhone and iPad only
If — and only if — you allow notifications, the app registers your device with our notification service (Back4App, a Parse hosting provider). The registration contains:
- your device's anonymous notification token (APNs)
- a random installation identifier generated by the app
- the device type ("ios"), the app name and version, the time zone and the language setting
None of this identifies you personally and none of it is linked to an account. It is used only to send occasional notifications about the app, and it is never sold or shared for advertising. If you decline notifications, or turn them off later, no registration is used. You can ask us to delete it at any time by writing to us. The Apple TV app does not use notifications.
4. Advertising — Guess the US State on iPhone and iPad, and HD Light
The free versions are supported by Google AdMob advertising. To choose and measure ads, Google may process data such as device and advertising identifiers, your IP address (which indicates an approximate location) and information about how you interact with ads.
Because the app is also used by children and teenagers, Guess the US State asks Google for ads suitable for all ages only (rating "G").
Your consent (EEA, UK and Switzerland). Before the app requests an ad, Google's consent message appears. If you agree, ads can be personalized. If you decline, the app keeps showing ads, but limited and non-personalized ones. You can change your mind at any time: in the app tap ⓘ and then "Privacy settings".
Tracking (App Tracking Transparency). From version 4.0, after Google's consent message, Guess the US State uses Apple's system prompt to ask whether you allow it to track your activity across other companies' apps and websites.
- If you allow it, Google can use the device's advertising identifier (IDFA) to show you more relevant ads and measure their results.
- If you decline, the IDFA is not used and you still see ads, just less personalized.
- The prompt does not appear if you declined Google's consent or if you have Premium.
- You can change your choice at any time in Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking.
How Google uses this data is explained in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services and in the Google Privacy Policy.
With Premium (section 6), Guess the US State shows no ads, does not contact Google AdMob and does not ask for advertising consent. The Multiple choice mode never shows ads either.
5. Anonymous usage statistics — Guess the US State only
To understand which features are really used, Guess the US State (from version 4.0) sends a few anonymous usage statistics to PostHog, on servers in the European Union. They are always and only these signals:
- which screen you open: mode selection, information, Premium
- the start of a game, its completion or abandonment, with the chosen mode (Classic or Multiple choice)
- the opening of the Premium page, and where it was opened from
- a possible in-app purchase problem, reduced to a generic cause (for example "products unreachable")
Each signal also carries whether you use an iPhone, an iPad or an Apple TV, a random identifier generated by the app and the technical data that comes with any internet request (device model, system and app versions, language, IP address). Answers, scores and other game content never leave the device. No profile is built and the screen is never recorded. This data is not used to track you across other companies' apps or websites: the tracking in section 4 concerns Google advertising only, and only if you allow it.
6. Premium — Guess the US State only
In Guess the US State you can buy Premium with a yearly subscription or a one-time purchase. Premium removes the ads and unlocks the Multiple choice mode on iPhone and iPad, and unlocks the Apple TV app, with the same Apple Account. Payment is handled by Apple: we never see your payment details. To verify the purchase the app uses RevenueCat, which receives the purchase receipt from Apple together with a random identifier generated by the app: no name, no email, no account. You manage and cancel the subscription in your App Store account settings; purchases can be restored in the app, on the Premium screen.
7. What we don't do
- No accounts, no profiles
- No tracking unless you allow it, and only for Google advertising (section 4)
- No statistics that identify you: those in section 5 are anonymous and build no profiles
- No location: the app never asks for it
- No advertising in the paid and Kids versions, on Apple TV, in Multiple choice mode, and in Guess the US State with Premium
- No selling of your data
- No personal data knowingly collected from children
8. Your rights
Under the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) and the GDPR you can request access to, correction or deletion of the data described in section 3. Since we keep no information that identifies you, please tell us the approximate date you enabled notifications, so we can find the registration. For the advertising data in section 4, Google acts as an independent controller: you can also exercise your rights directly with Google, through the links above. The statistics in section 5 and the purchase data in section 6 contain nothing that identifies you, so we cannot link them to you. Write to [email protected].
9. Changes
If the apps gain new features, for example screen recording, this policy will be updated before their release, and the "last updated" date above will change.
