Frequently asked questions

How do I play?

Each turn a state lights up in yellow on the map and an enlarged copy pops out, so even the smallest ones like Rhode Island or Delaware are easy to see. Name it as fast as you can: when you have guessed all 50, the game is over.

What is the difference between Classic and Multiple choice?

In Classic you type the name of the state and you have three tries. In Multiple choice you pick one of four answers and you have two tries: the perfect mode for kids. Each mode has its own leaderboard.

How do I switch mode?

Tap ↺ (Restart) at the top: you go back to the start screen and choose the other mode. The current game starts over.

Why does Multiple choice have a lock?

Multiple choice is unlocked by Premium: with the same purchase you remove the ads, open the mode and can play on Apple TV. Multiple choice never shows ads.

How are points calculated?

Each right answer is worth 100 points plus a speed bonus, which starts at 100 and drops to zero in 20 seconds: the timer color and the bar show how much bonus is left. In Classic, if you make mistakes before guessing, the points for that state are divided by the number of tries. Each wrong answer takes away 10 points, but the score never goes below zero.

Do I have to type the exact name?

Capitals, accents, apostrophes and hyphens don't matter: "new york", "New York" and "New York State" all work, and so do "Hawai'i" and "Washington State".

I don't know the answer: can I skip it?

Yes, tap "Skip this state": you move on to the next one and the skipped state comes back later in the same game.

Does the timer keep running if I stop?

No. It stops during the "Correct!" and "Wrong!" messages, when you tap ⏸ (pause) and when you leave the app. It resumes where it left off.

How do the leaderboards work?

When you guess all 50 states, your score goes to the Game Center leaderboard of the mode you played. There are two leaderboards, Classic and Multiple choice, the same on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. Open them from the ⓘ screen or at the end of the game with "View leaderboard". You need to be signed in to Game Center in Settings.

Does it work on iPad and Apple TV?

Yes: from version 4.0 Guess the US State is a single app for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. On Apple TV you play Multiple choice with the remote — the Play/Pause button pauses the game — and you need Premium, bought on Apple TV or on iPhone/iPad with the same Apple Account.

What is Premium and how do I get it?

Premium removes all ads, unlocks Multiple choice and unlocks the Apple TV app. In the ⓘ screen tap "Premium", or tap the locked Multiple choice: you can choose a yearly subscription or a one-time purchase that lasts forever.

I changed device or reinstalled the app: how do I get Premium back?

On the Premium screen tap "Restore Purchases", with the same Apple Account you used to buy. No account of ours is needed.

How do I cancel the subscription?

In your App Store account settings: Settings → your name → Subscriptions. With an active subscription you also find a "Manage Subscription" button on the Premium screen. Cancel at least 24 hours before it expires, otherwise it renews.

I bought an old paid version: do I have to pay again?

The old app is still yours and keeps working without ads, even if it is no longer on sale and no longer updated. If you deleted it, you can download it again from your App Store purchases. The new Guess the US State is a different app on the App Store, so the purchase does not carry over.

Are the ads suitable for children?

The app asks Google for ads suitable for all ages only. If you prefer not to see any, you can remove them with Premium or play Multiple choice, which never shows ads.

How do I change my advertising privacy choices?

For Google's consent tap ⓘ and then "Privacy settings" (the option appears where European rules require it). For cross-app tracking go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. For details see the privacy policy.

I don't get notifications

Check in Settings → Notifications → Guess US State that they are allowed. Notifications are optional and used only for occasional news about the app.

Reporting a problem

To help us reproduce it quickly, tell us your iPhone, iPad or Apple TV model, the system version and the app version with its build (you find them at the bottom of the ⓘ screen), plus what you were doing just before the problem appeared.
